Types of Twin Wall Flue Systems

Twin wall chimney systems are categorised by how and where they're installed. Understanding the differences helps you select components suitable for your property and routing requirements.

Internal Twin Wall Systems

Internal twin wall flue pipe runs vertically through the building, passing through floors, ceilings, and the roof. These systems sit within the building envelope, offering better weather protection and a neater finish - though each floor penetration requires a ceiling plate and firestop to maintain safe clearances from combustible materials. Internal routing is ideal when the stove is centrally located in the house and external installation isn't practical or desirable. Where the flue passes through a loft or storage area, it must be accessible for inspection if boxed in.

External Twin Wall Systems

External twin-wall systems run along the outside face of a building, attached with wall-support brackets typically spaced at two-metre intervals. Twin wall flue systems are often preferred in retrofitting scenarios due to their flexibility - particularly for properties without an existing chimney or where internal routing through multiple floors would be disruptive. External runs need a wall sleeve where the flue pipe exits the building and weatherproof flashings at the roof line. Twin-wall flues can appear visually bulky due to their internal insulation layer, so many customers choose a matt black finish or a powder-coated option for a cleaner look against exterior walls.

Adjustable Length Systems

No two buildings share identical ceiling heights or roof pitches, so adjustable and telescopic components are essential. These include telescopic extension sections, offset elbows (available at 15°, 30°, and 45° angles), and adaptors for connecting to a single-wall flue pipe at the stove. Maximising straight vertical runs in flue installation is essential for effective airflow - each bend reduces draft, so keep the route as direct as possible. Twin-wall flue systems have an inner diameter of 5 to 8 inches, providing flexibility for different heating appliance sizes and building configurations.
